What is Talent Strategies?

Merriam-Webster provides the following definitions:

Talent:  a person of talent or groups of persons of talent in a field or activity

Strategy
:
the art of devising or employing plans toward a goal

Hence.....

Talent StrategiesThe art and science of focusing on your primary work place investment, employees, by creating and deploying an integrated approach for the growth, development and excellence of the people that work for your company.

By creating a strategy for the growth and development of your employees you will be able to:

  • realize your business goals and objectives sooner
  • understand where you have solid benchstrength and where you need to build depth
  • develop leaders for the future
  • create a corporate reputation of being a place where people want to work
  • help your employees understand how they can contribute to the organizations success
  • enhance employee satisfaction and retention by showing them that you are committed to building their skills and thereby providing them with enhanced opportunities in the future
  • minimize succession risks

Experience has taught us that organizations are very good at creating strategic growth plans or objectives, but how often do those plans include a plan for how you will prepare your employees to achieve those goals?

We have also experienced many organizations that create replacement plans so that they feel confident they have a back-up candidate should an opening occur.  However, many organizations don't actually prepare employees to be successful should they get promoted.

Organizations that are often identified as being the best at developing leaders share the following characteristics:

  • Senior most organizational leaders spend a significant amount of time involved in the training, support or preparations of future leaders.
  • All organizational leaders are made accountable for the development of others
  • High potential employees are routinely identified and systematically developed
  • A variety of development approaches are utilized to support employees at different levels
  • Employees understand what it takes to get to the next level in their organization

How does your organization measure up?
